Well, if you figure glass is transparent then I'd say that the background has a lot to do with it. Glass always looks terrible against a black background. Try it against the old checkerboard floor or something...

My glass is never always the same (it always depends on the use), but try the attribute settings:

   Color           255,255,255
   Filter          220,220,220
   Reflect         30,30,30    <---(Play with this)
   Specular        255,255,255
   Hardness        255
   IofRef          1.5
